Humpback Whale

I made this for a friend. The whale was actually fairly easy to make, but the wave was a nightmare. I made a basic shape, put a mirror modifier on it because I’m not THAT crazy, and then sculpted. I wasn’t sure if I was going to release this, which I’m not, I like knowing only one exists and it’s on my friend’s shelf. I did do a retopology on it though, which in hindsight was unnecessary, but I suppose every time you practice something you get better at it.

I tried to keep the geometry as clean as possible despite the weird shape and then to give it better detail I subdivided it. I cleaned it up by using the original sculpt to shape it and voila, I had a decent model with passable geometry.

This was in my earlier days, so I wasn’t as good at printing, on top of my first printer was the Creality CR-10 and there’s a bit of a learning curve. I now have a Bambu which in my opinion is vastly superior. To be fair, the CR-10 is a much older printer and I’m sure Creality has stepped up their game with newer printers, I’m just very happy with the brand switch.

I had a lot of post processing to do as a result which was a mixture of filler spray paint and wood putty and more sanding than I care for. I think the result was worth the effort in the end.
